Research:
Indigo, Shibori
and Natural Dyes
Natural dyes are another key area of exploration at FarmLab, where we experiment with pigments derived from both foraged and cultivated plants, as well as organic kitchen waste.
A central focus of this research is the cultivation of Japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria), which we use fresh or process to extract the iconic blue pigment. This hands-on approach connects us to ancient dyeing traditions while encouraging sustainable material practices.
We are also particularly interested in the Shibori technique—a Japanese manual resist-dyeing method dating back to the 8th century. Through Shibori, we explore the interplay of fabric, pattern, and natural colour, blending historical methods with contemporary design possibilities.
