Project:
Yakisugi Carpentry

Our workshop building itself is an ongoing site of experimentation. We clad the façade of the former barn and woodshed using Yakisugi (焼杉), called sometimes Shou Sugi Ban (焼 杉 板), a traditional Japanese technique of charring wood to enhance its durability.

Using low-quality spruce planks sourced from our own forest—wood that would typically be unsuitable for external use—we applied this age-old method to "upgrade" the material. The charred surface not only creates a striking blackened texture but also serves as a natural shield against weathering, insects, and fungi, extending the lifespan of the untreated wood while minimizing environmental impact.
